“Civil Society Perspectives”
Journalist Ilana Sod led this dynamic panel discussion with representatives of global NGOs. A broad range of issues were touched upon including from global warming to human rights abuses to whaling. The panelist explained the tactics they used for dealing with governments and the corporate sector.
According to John Passacantando of Greenpeace, "Whether you like activists or not, they have the ability to go in and build power."
The panelists were careful to point out that they do not only react to companies who are not doing the right thing. They also work to actively support companies that are working to solve important social issues. David Yarnold of Environmental Defense gave an example of how his organization worked with FedEx and Eaton Corporation to create a diesel hybrid engine that dramatically cut emissions.
Amnesty International USA's Amy O'Meara said that businesses must take responsibility to protect the people around the world who are fighting for their local environments and their rights. She said companies need to "reach out, be honest, provide information and ensure an environment for safe dialog."
According to Tony Newman of Global Exchange, "The thing is that it is an ongoing struggle... We make progress, but there is still a lot of work to be done."
The panel was asked what companies can do to improve relationships with NGOs. O'Meara responded, "Show us that you are trying... and we will take you seriously and work with you over time to help you become socially responsible." Yarnold said, "It's cool to be green, but don't exaggerate... have a genuine story to tell.
