Devin Cohen
Student, Brown University and winner of the 2005 Prudential Spirit of Community Award
Devin Cohen, a sophomore at Brown University, has obtained more than $500,000 worth of donated toys, games, books, clothing and other items for young cancer patients in 26 hospitals across the country. While volunteering as a play partner with children undergoing treatment for cancer, Devin noticed that the hospital unit's toys were old and outdated, so he began soliciting local merchants for donations to benefit both the patients and their families. As he became increasingly successful, Devin began soliciting donations from national corporations. Upon realizing that patients need more than just toys, Devin founded the Children's Hospital Foundation's teen committee at the Westchester Medical Center; since then, his committee has raised over $1,000,000 through the "Go the Distance" walk-a-thon. Devin has been a keynote speaker at national corporate events, children's hospital conferences, and public service groups in an effort to educate others about charitable causes.
