Dohjin Yoon
Student, Dartmouth College and winner of the 2004 Prudential Spirit of Community Award
Dohjin Yoon, a student from Seoul, South Korea, who is currently attending Dartmouth University. He won the Prudential Spirit of Community Award in 2004 for his effort to organize a major basketball tournament for dozens of handicapped teenagers who had never before had the opportunity to play competitive sports. While Do-jin and two friends were volunteering at a facility for disabled students, they discovered that the students loved basketball, but had no opportunity to play. After setting up a small game for the students, Do-jin and his partners decided to plan a tournament and involved disabled kids from several other facilities. To raise money for uniforms and other expenses, Do-jin recorded and sold 2,000 CDs of his piano playing, which brought in more than $17,000. He and his friends also created a website to promote the tournament; signed up corporate sponsors such as Nike, Coca-Cola and Burger King; and recruited a referee and other volunteers. The event was not only an exhilarating and enriching experience for the six teams that took part, but also a vivid demonstration to the community of the courage and potential of the disabled.
