Ruben Adriano Vicente

Student of International Relations and Diplomacy, Mozambique

Ruben Adriano Vicente got involved with radio at the age of eight since he lived close to the provincial delegation for Radio Mozambique in Zambezia, where he is originally from. The present Child-to Child radio program did not exist at that time so he used to collaborate by sharing stories on the radio.

When the program started in 2000, Vicente started collaborating as a presenter. After his family moved to Maputo, 13-year old he continued presenting the program until the age of 18. Since then, he has been involved in technical issues and production. He goes to Radio Mozambique twice a week, when he is not at university, and he's mainly involved in producing the Saturday morning program, which is broadcast live.

Vicente feels that his participation in the radio program has been important for creating a space for children and young people to express their opinions and share ideas. He notes that one of the major changes/positive impacts has been in relation to HIV and AIDS since children and young people write letters or call in to the program to talk about issues that may be difficult to discuss with adults. He believes that things have changed because an effective means of creating dialogue between children and young people has been established.

He is in the second year of a degree in International Relations and Diplomacy.
