Tony Newman
Board Member, Global Exchange
Tony Newman is Director of Communications at the Drug Policy Alliance, the nation's leading drug policy organization, and a Member of the Board of Directors of Global Exchange, a non-profit human rights organization.
At the Drug Policy Alliance, he has worked to generate hundreds of newspaper, radio, and television reports on the failed war on drugs. Mr. Newman has worked as a senior Account Executive at Fenton Communications, and was a Co-Founder of Communication Works, a public interest public relations firm based in San Francisco. Prior to that, he was Director of Communications at Global Exchange, where he worked on the high-profile media campaign to expose Nike labor abuses overseas and to promote fair trade in the coffee and chocolate industries.
Media exposés and consumer activism were key to popularizing the fair trade agenda which ultimately resulted in Starbucks and Proctor and Gamble embracing Fair Trade as a viable corporate strategy. Mr. Newman1s creative and innovative approaches to communication and media have consistently promoted the idea that consumers, when given the choice and information, will choose socially responsible and environmentally sustainable products. Global Exchange's popular Green Festivals which bring together innovative businesses and thousands of social activists and consumers in Chicago, Washington DC and San Francisco have shown the value of a new approach to business (www.greenfestivals.org) Mr. Newman received his BA from the University of California- Santa Cruz and has taught public relations courses at Hunter College in New York.
